Legend on the Tsimhian Territory

Ours Esprit, territoire Tsimshian au coeur de la forêt pluviale du Grand Ours (Canada).

Une légende Tsimshian raconte que lorsque la terre était encore couverte de glace, le Corbeau créateur décida de changer la planète en une immense forêt. Afin de se souvenir de ce monde pure et blanc, il changea un dizième des ours noirs en ours blancs. Le Corbeau offra cette forêt pluviale à ces ours en décrétant qu´il y vivraient en paix. L´ours Esprit (Kermode) se trouve uniquement sur une poignée d´îles, c´est l´un des ours le plus rare de la planète avec seulement quelques centaines d´individus. Un gène récessif produit ce pelage blanc, exclusif à cette région.

L´ours Esprit est un symbole de cette côte et des peuples Tsimshian. Nous devons en être reconnaissant, respectueux, et donc protéger cette fragile côte de nos activités industrielles.

Spirit bear in the Tsimshian territory in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest of Canada, BC.

A Tsimshian legend states that long ago when the earth was covered with ice, the Raven creator decided to bring beautiful green land. As a reminder of when the world was pure white and clean, the Raven went to the black bear people and turned every tenth bear white. The Raven set a rainforest and decreed that the bears would live in peace and harmony. The Spirit bear (Kermode) can be found in only few islands of this coast, it´s one of the rarest bear of the planet with less than few hundred specimens. A recessive gene is responsible of this cream-colored fur.

The Spirit bear is part of the Tsimshian culture. We have to be respectful and grateful to the First Nations and to protect this fragile coast from industrial activities.
